| October 24 - With the Bard-Vassar game less than a month away, FEMA officials are determined not to let a predictable, ominous disaster come without taking measures to prevent the kind of destruction witnessed in New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina. "With the kind of devastation to come when Bard slaughters Vassar on November 22, we knew we had to go above and beyond to make sure that the people at Vassar College were taken care of," said FEMA Acting Director R. David Paulison. Nearly 4,000 National Guard troops are en route to Poughkeepsie from New Orleans, ready with food and supplies. "While we recognize that New Orleans is still recovering from its recent tragedy, it is clear that the kind of disaster about to hit Vassar makes Hurricane Katrina look like Hurrican Rita," said Vassar President Frances Daly Fergusson. As usual, Bard's philanthropic efforts will be at the forefront of the Vassar recovery. "We raised over $70,000 for the victims of Hurricane Katrina," said Bard College President Leon Botstein. "We had already planned a number of events for Vassar graduates in need of remedial education. However, with the beating our basketball team will lay down on the Brewers, we will redouble our efforts." Indeed, Vassar is no stranger to aid. 91% of all Vassar graduates live off of either unemployment or welfare. The "Make-a-Wish Foundation" has worked tirelessly to find work for at least one former Brewer by 2009. And of course, Vassar recently completed its second year of a five-year contract with Hooked on Phonics. The two have teamed up to let any Vassar graduate take classes with the literacy program for free. For those hoping to make a difference, please send your donations or sympathy cards to: |
